Netflix announced Tuesday that the re‑edited film Ginga Tokkyū Milky☆Subway Kakueki Teisha Gekijō Iki (known in English as Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express) will debut in the United States on June 1.
The streaming platform also revealed a lineup of other titles slated to arrive in the U.S. during May and June:
- BLUE LOCK VS U‑20 JAPAN – May 25
- My Dress‑Up Darling – Season 2 – May 25
- Assassination Classroom – Season 2 – June 1
- Shangri‑La Frontier – Season 2 – June 1
- One Piece – Whole Cake Island 6 – June 1
- One Piece – Whole Cake Island 7 – June 1
- Akane‑banashi – May 16
The original Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express hit Japanese theaters on February 6, selling 109,500 tickets and pulling in roughly ¥151 million (about US$988 k) in its opening three days.
This version condenses the series’ 12 episodes into a single feature and adds fresh content.
Japan will see an even more expanded cut on June 12, titled Rinji Zōhatsu Milky☆Subway Kakueki Teisha Gekijō Iki (Extra Service Milky☆Subway Local Train to the Theater). It will be available in MX4D, 4DX, and standard 2D formats.
Returning cast members include Momoka Terasawa as Chiharu and Anna Nagase as Makina, with the rest of the original voice talent reprising their roles. Creator Yōhei Kameyama again helmed the project—writing, directing, producing, and even handling character design, modeling, animation, and editing largely on his own. Sound work was provided by Bit Groove Promotion.
The anime originally aired in July 2025 on Tokyo MX and streamed simultaneously on YouTube, where dubbed versions in English, Portuguese, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Thai, Indonesian, French, Hindi, and Russian were also available.
Here’s the series’ official English synopsis:
Super‑human Chiharu and cyborg Makina are arrested for violating space‑traffic regulations. They join a rag‑tag crew—fellow super‑humans Akane and Kanata, and cyborg buddies Kurt and Max—who were caught at the same time. Police officer Ryoko sentences them to clean up the interplanetary train known as the “Milky☆Subway” as community service.
What should be a straightforward job turns chaotic when the train abruptly rockets into deep space, throwing the crew into a bewildering scramble.
No purpose, no principle, no point—just a dazzling, momentum‑powered space‑train spectacle.
The opening theme, “Gingakei Made Tonde Ike!” (Fly to the Galaxy!), is a 1977 track by the legendary girl group Candies.
Kameyama first introduced the concept with the short Milky☆Highway in 2022 as his graduation project for Kadokawa’s Vantan Game Academy CG Animator program. The short—available in both English‑subtitled and original Japanese versions—has amassed a combined 6.75 million views.
In the original short, Chiharu was voiced by Mizuki Fumitsuki, while Makina was portrayed by Kana Kobayashi.
