Marvel Comics and Japanese publisher Kadokawa have announced a new partnership to produce upcoming manga adaptations of Marvel characters. The collaboration was first revealed during the Marvel Fanfare panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday.
Manga creator tokitokoro, known for works including Lynx, River in Me, and Jeff Land Shark, confirmed the news on X/Twitter the same day and shared concept designs reimagining Spider-Man in Shibuya, Daredevil in Shinjuku, and a yakuza-style Punisher. tokitokoro stated that serialization will begin before the end of the year.
According to news outlet Bleeding Cool, the collaboration will include five original manga volumes. tokitokoro’s project is titled Spider-Man of Shibuya. The lineup will also feature a series focusing on Spider-Gwen, illustrated by manga creator Ryūsei Yamada, known for the Revenger manga adaptation and Disney Twisted-Wonderland: Manga—Anthology.
This announcement comes as Shueisha’s existing contract with Walt Disney Japan to publish manga adaptations of Marvel Comics characters is set to expire on September 30. Shueisha announced on July 1 that it will begin removing five Marvel manga titles from digital storefronts between September 28 and 30: Marvel x Shonen Jump+ Super Collaboration, Secret Reverse, Spider-Man: Octo-Girl, Spider-Man: Kizuna, and Deadpool: Samurai.
