Witch on the Holy Night Anime Film Reveals Returning Main Cast

ufotable dropped the exciting news on Saturday, revealing that the original voice cast is coming back for the film adaptation of Type-Moon’s classic visual novel PC game, Mahōtsukai no Yoru (known internationally as Witch on the Holy Night).

The film is scheduled for release sometime this year.

The original Witch on the Holy Night visual novel takes place in the late 1980s and follows Aoko Aozaki, one of two sisters who are heirs to a prestigious lineage of modern mages. Despite having zero interest in magic, Aoko gets unexpectedly named as her family’s magical heir and reluctantly begins training under Alice Kuonji, a reclusive witch living in a lonely hilltop manor. While juggling her duties as student council president and her magical apprenticeship, Aoko also befriends Sōjūrō Shizuki (called Soujyuro Sizuki in the English game version), a transfer student utterly unfamiliar with modern life, and deals with the scheming of her older sister Tōko Aozaki, who believes her birthright was stolen.

Type-Moon most recently brought the game to Steam in December 2023.

Aniplex released the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch versions in the West back in December 2022, launching simultaneously with the Japanese release. Those versions have now sold over 150,000 copies worldwide.

Mahōtsukai no Yoru was actually one of the very first projects from Kinoko Nasu and Takashi Takeuchi back in the mid-90s, long before they founded Type-Moon. It started as a novel they only shared with friends, but Type-Moon eventually turned it into a full visual novel with artwork by Hirokazu Koyama that launched in April 2012, with plans for two sequels already in the works.

The story holds a special place in the loosely connected “Nasuverse” – that’s what English-speaking fans call the shared universe behind Type-Moon’s works, including Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and The Garden of Sinners. Fun fact: an older Aoko Aozaki actually mentors Shiki Tohno from Tsukihime, while her sister Tōko ends up employing Shiki Ryōgi from Garden of Sinners. The recent Tsukihime remake, -A piece of blue glass moon-, hit PS4 and Switch in Japan in August 2021 and launched internationally on PS4 and Switch in June 2024.
