Gundam Seed Freedom Zero Prequel Anime Confirmed for Theatrical Release
Anime was announced during the Gundam Seed FREEDOM special screening in November 2024.

Bandai Namco Filmworks board director and producer Naohiro Ogata revealed during the “Gundam Conference Spring 2026” livestream that Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM ZERO—the prequel to Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM—will receive a theatrical release.
Background and Development
A teaser video for the prequel premiered during the second round of special edition screenings of Gundam Seed FREEDOM in Japanese theaters in November 2024.
Director Mitsuo Fukuda, producer Hisakazu Naka, and voice actor Sōichirō Hoshi (Kira Yamato) appeared at a stage greeting during the first screening to announce the project. They disclosed that screenwriter Chiaki Morosawa and Shigeru Morita crafted the prequel’s scenario while working on Gundam Seed FREEDOM itself. Fukuda noted that the script for Gundam Seed FREEDOM ZERO was completed 20 years ago.
The storyboards are nearly half finished, with the oldest predating those of Gundam Seed FREEDOM. Dialogue recording has already been completed. Fukuda added that two decades ago the project was originally planned as an original video anime (OVA), but the staff has not yet decided on its final format.
Performance of Gundam Seed FREEDOM
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM opened in Japan in January 2024, debuting at #1 on the box office. It sold 634,182 tickets for ¥1,065,983,130 (about US$7.20 million) in its first three days, marking the highest three‑day opening for the Gundam franchise and becoming the highest‑earning Gundam film in Japan ever.
The film was screened in the United States and Canada by Bandai Namco Filmworks and Fathom Events in May 2024, and is currently streaming on Netflix.
Special Editions
Special editions of Gundam Seed FREEDOM played in Japanese theaters in fall 2024. One version included additional footage at the end, while another featured different footage—specifically the teaser video for the prequel.
Production Credits
Fukuda directed the film at Bandai Namco Filmworks, co‑writing the script with his late wife Chiaki Morosawa and Liu Goto. Character design was handled by Hisashi Hirai, known for his work on Mobile Suit Gundam Seed.
