Motoka Murakami Draws New 1-Shot for Musashi no Ken Manga After 40 Years

After more than four decades of silence, manga legend Motoka Murakami has thrilled fans by announcing a brand-new one-shot for his classic kendo series Musashi no Ken. Taking to his X/Twitter account, Murakami revealed the special chapter will drop on Shogakukan‘s Sunday Webry platform this coming May 20th—marking the manga’s first fresh story since its original run concluded way back in 1985.

Set against the scenic backdrop of Iwateyama, the story follows young Musashi—a boy born to two legendary kendo masters who named him after the iconic swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, hoping he’d carry on their legacy. The original manga captivated readers in Shogakukan‘s Weekly Shonen Sunday from 1981 to 1985, later inspiring a beloved 72-episode anime adaptation that aired from 1985 to 1986.

Fans might also remember Murakami from his acclaimed historical medical drama JIN, which he brought to English audiences through a Patreon launch in 2017. That series went on to inspire multiple live-action adaptations—including two Japanese TV dramas (starring Takao Ōsawa), a Korean version, and even a Takarazuka Revue stage play—with both Japanese dramas finding a new home on Netflix in late 2024.
