Exciting news for manga and anime fans! Ichjinsha just announced that Tomo Nagawa’s charming series Would you like to be a tanuki? (Omae, Tanuki ni Narane–ka?) is getting its very own television anime adaptation. To celebrate, they’ve dropped a teaser video and a sweet key visual for everyone to enjoy.

Nagawa even created a special illustration to mark this awesome announcement:

The talented Jun Kamiya (you might know him from directing Kingdom season 1, Hikaru no Go, or Let’s Make a Mug Too) is taking the director’s chair at Nippon Animation. Meanwhile, Masaki Wachi (who worked on Kingdom seasons 1 and 2) is handling series composition and script supervision. Cocoro Takemoto (known for Genbanojō and Hakushon Daimaō 2020) is bringing the characters to life with her designs, and Minako Seki (also from Kingdom seasons 1 and 2) is composing the soundtrack.
The story follows the whimsical tanuki spirit Koganemaru, who seeks out humans feeling lost or overwhelmed by life. He gently asks them: “Want to try living as a tanuki for a bit?” Through this playful invitation, he helps them rediscover what truly matters in their own lives—blending folklore with heartfelt self-discovery.
Nagawa first shared this delightful tale in Ichijinsha’s Comic Pool digital magazine back in April 2021. The manga has been steadily gaining fans, with the ninth compiled volume arriving in October 2025. Mark your calendars—the tenth and latest volume hits shelves on May 25!
