The May 19 issue of Japan’s official Kanpō gazette shows that Crunchyroll’s Japanese branch posted a net profit of 453 million yen (≈ US $2.85 million) for the fiscal period ending December 2025. That’s a steep 63 % drop from the 1.239 billion yen (≈ US $7.79 million) profit reported for 2024.

Crunchyroll notes that its Japan office “traditionally consists of content, programming, production and acquisition teams, which are non‑revenue‑generating.”

On May 8, Crunchyroll announced that it has surpassed 21 million paid subscribers worldwide.

In March, the company laid off a number of staff as part of a restructuring that shifted roles by location and altered its e‑commerce strategy. The changes were not driven by cost‑cutting measures.

Crunchyroll operates as an independent joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment (U.S.) and Aniplex (Japan). Both Sony Pictures Entertainment and Aniplex’s parent, Sony Music Entertainment (Japan), are subsidiaries of the Tokyo‑based Sony Group.

Sony’s Funimation Global Group completed its acquisition of Crunchyroll from AT&T on 9 August 2021, after announcing the deal in December 2020. The purchase price was US $1.175 billion, paid in cash at closing. Since then, Funimation’s home‑video releases have been listed under the Crunchyroll brand.
