Bandai Namco Entertainment America released a new system trailer on Thursday for Echoes of Aincrad, the upcoming action‑RPG based on Reki Kawahara’s Sword Art Online franchise. The video showcases several character abilities, partner options, and weapon types.
The game will launch in Japan on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on July 9, followed by a PC release on Steam on July 10. Western territories receive all platforms on July 10.
Four editions will be available:
- Standard – the base game.
- Deluxe – includes the expansion DLC, a starter item pack, and early access to “Death Game” mode (normally unlocked after completing the story).
- Ultimate – bundles everything from the Deluxe edition plus the “Unanswered//butterfly” bonus anime, a digital soundtrack, an artbook, and an in‑game armor pack.
- Aincrad – sold exclusively through the Bandai Namco Store; it contains all Ultimate content plus physical goodies such as a beanie, wall scroll, patches, and stickers.
The bundled “Unanswered//butterfly” anime, included with the Ultimate and Premium editions, follows side characters during the events of the original Sword Art Online story.
Set in the original Aincrad MMO, Echoes of Aincrad lets players experience the death‑game alongside familiar faces like Kirito and Asuna while exploring the world with new companions.
The theme song, “Live to Survive,” is performed by Aimer.
Reki Kawahara began the Sword Art Online web novel in 2001, publishing it online until 2008. Kadokawa’s Dengeki Bunko later released a revised print edition in 2009, concluding with the “Alicization” arc in 2016. The series returned in 2017 with the “Moon Cradle” arc, followed by the “Unital Ring” arc in 2018, and now spans 28 volumes. It has spawned numerous spin‑offs, multiple anime seasons, a feature film, and an upcoming live‑action series, while the “Progressive” novel spin‑off inspired two additional anime films.
