Kadokawa announced in January 2023 that a sequel to Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun was in the works.
The original Made in Abyss TV series (13 episodes) premiered in Japan in July 2017. Sentai Filmworks licensed the series for Blu‑ray release in October 2018. In the U.S., the subtitled version streamed on Amazon’s now‑defunct Anime Strike, while HIDIVE handled streaming outside the United States.
The second season, titled Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun (Retsujitsu no Ōgonkyō), aired from July 2022 to September 2022, concluding with a one‑hour finale. HIDIVE streamed it concurrently with the Japanese broadcast, and Sentai Filmworks secured home‑video rights.
The first feature film, Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul, opened in Japan in January 2020, earning roughly ¥102 million (≈ US$930 k) in its opening weekend and receiving 4DX/MX4D screenings. Sentai Filmworks gave the film a limited theatrical run in North America in August 2020 and later provided virtual screenings.
The two earlier compilation films—Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn (January 2019) and Made in Abyss: Wandering Twilight (two weeks later)—were both premiered in the U.S. by Sentai Filmworks and are now available for streaming on HIDIVE.
In the world of Made in Abyss, the Abyss is a massive, uncharted chasm filled with bizarre creatures and priceless relics. Humanity’s fascination with its mysteries fuels a cadre of explorers known as “Cave Raiders.” Orphaned girl Riko, who lives on the surface town of Ōrth, dreams of becoming a Cave Raider like her mother. During one of her early descents, she discovers a humanoid robot boy who becomes her companion.
