April 7 has been designated “Gundam Day,” and Tokyo’s life‑size Unicorn Gundam statue is slated for removal in August.
New Animated Short
The Gundam Conference Spring 2026 livestream debuted the prologue video A Boy With Gundam for the upcoming “Road to 50” project. Directed by Tsukuro Hayakawa, the short follows three generations of Gundam fans and features music from PEOPLE 1. Viewers can toggle English subtitles for the lyrics.
Gundam‑Con Event
A fan‑focused “Gundam‑Con” will take place at Makuhari Messe in Chiba from January 9 to 11, 2027. Entry passes will be sold via a random drawing, and the show will include booths, tournaments, merchandise stalls, and live music. Further details will be announced this summer, with plans to bring the event to other regions worldwide after the Japanese debut.
Gundam Day and Related Events
The unofficial Japan Anniversary Association has officially set April 7 as Gundam Day, beginning in 2027—the same date the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime premiered in 1979.
In addition, the Tokyo National Museum is preparing an exhibition dedicated to Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino scheduled for 2029.
Life‑Size Unicorn Gundam
The 1/1‑scale RX‑0 Unicorn Gundam statue on Odaiba’s artificial island will be taken down at the end of August 2026. Before its removal, the statue will receive updated “finale version” decals. The monument was first unveiled at Diver City Tokyo in September 2017 (see original announcement).
Other Anniversary Projects
- A remaster of the original 1979 television series is underway.
- The “Gundam Landmark Project” aims to build a dedicated facility in Japan for fans from around the globe.
- Details were also shared about the ongoing collaboration with Hololive Productions, including new visuals and additional talent—several Hololive English members will participate.
