Bandai Namco Previews ‘Unanswered//butterfly’ Bonus Anime for Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad
Bandai Namco Entertainment has debuted a new trailer for the upcoming action RPG Echoes of Aincrad, based on Reki Kawahara’s Sword Art Online franchise. The trailer highlights the bundled promotional anime “Unanswered//butterfly” and includes a second TV spot featuring the theme song “Live to Survive” by Aimer.

About the Bonus Anime
The special promotional anime is included with the Ultimate and Premium Editions of the game and follows other characters during the events of the original Sword Art Online story.
Release Details and Editions
The game launches in Japan on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on July 9, and on PC via Steam on July 10. In the West, it releases on all platforms on July 10.
Editions include:
- Standard Edition – base game.
- Deluxe Edition – expansion DLC, starter item pack, and early access to the “Death Game” mode (a mode that deletes your save on character death, normally unlocked after completing the game once).
- Ultimate Edition – everything in the Deluxe Edition plus the “Unanswered//butterfly” bonus content app/special anime, digital soundtrack, digital artbook, and an in‑game armor pack.
- Aincrad Edition – exclusive to the Bandai Namco Store; contains Deluxe and Ultimate Edition contents plus a beanie, wall scroll, patches, and sticker pack.
Game Setting and Story
Set in the world of Aincrad—the floating castle that serves as the deadly virtual MMO in the original Sword Art Online—Echoes of Aincrad lets players join the 10,000 trapped gamers and explore alongside familiar faces like Kirito and Asuna.
Background on Sword Art Online
Reki Kawahara launched the Sword Art Online web novel in 2001, serializing it from 2002 to 2008 on his personal site. Kadokawa’s Dengeki Bunko imprint began releasing a revised print edition in 2009, concluding the original narrative with the “Alicization” arc in the 18th volume (2016). The series later expanded with the “Moon Cradle” arc (2017) and the “Unital Ring” arc (2018), reaching its 28th volume today. Over the years, the franchise has spawned novel and manga spin‑offs, multiple anime seasons, an anime film, and even a proposed live‑action series. Kawahara’s spin‑off Sword Art Online: Progressive has also inspired two anime films.
